Short Answer: A Travel Blogger with a Taste for Dark History

Welcome to Magic and Shadows.

I’m Louise — a solo traveller, photographer, and storyteller exploring the magic of the land and the shadows of the past through first-hand travel experiences. I’ve always been drawn to nature, stories of magic, and the macabre.

As a child, being read J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit by my parents, my imagination was opened to quests, ancient worlds, and magic beyond the ordinary. That early fascination never left; it simply deepened, evolving into a lifelong interest in history, folklore, mythology, and the darker stories that sit beneath the surface of the past. I decided I wanted to go on my own adventures!

My first solo travel adventure was walking the 500mile Camino Frances route of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage through Spain. Since then, I have been hooked and have cityhopped through Europe, discovering ancient and magical sites along the way. My intent is to visit many more places around the world, as there is so much more to discover!

Drawn to the Dark - Solo Female Travel meets Dark Tourism.

This blog is about slow, connected travel from a solo female traveller’s perspective with a splash of dark tourism. I write about both places and people in history with macabre and magical backgrounds.

I visit places with strong ties to Dark History, folklore, mythology, and ancient magic, and I share what those places are really like, how to get there, what to expect, and how they made me feel. I believe travel is about more than ticking destinations off a list; it’s about connection, curiosity, and presence.

I travel solo so that I can be on my own time and go to the places I want to go. I offer solo travel tips and advice for those seeking adventure like me! Alongside storytelling, I share practical travel advice on packing, transport, safety, and building confidence while travelling alone.
