ancient magic in one
travel blog
from unesco world heritage to dark storytelling
A Travel Blog with a Twist! I am a Travel Blogger and Photographer with a Taste for Dark History, Historical Sites, and the Ancient History of our World.
Welcome to Magic and Shadows. I’m Louise — a solo traveller, photographer, and storyteller exploring the ancient magic of the land and the dark history of the past through first-hand travel experiences. I’ve always been drawn to stories of magic, and the macabre and love to find these stories through travel.
This travel blog explores ancient historical sites along with Dark History locations that can be explored through dark tourism.
Inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien
As a child, being read J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit by my parents, my imagination was opened to quests, ancient worlds, and magic beyond the ordinary. That early fascination evolved into a lifelong interest in history, folklore, mythology, and the darker stories that lurk in the shadows. I decided I wanted to go on my own adventures and discover unusual, dark and magical places.
Solo Female Travel and beyond
My first solo travel adventure was walking the 500mile Camino Francés route of El Camino de Santiago. A spiritual pilgrimage through Spain. Since then, I have been hooked and have cityhopped through Europe, discovering ancient and magical sites along the way. My intent is to visit many more places around the world, as there is so much more to discover!

Cultural Sites and Historical Architecture
UNESCO World Heritage Sites are places of Outstanding Universal Value, protected as “irreplaceable treasures“ of cultural, historical, and natural significance.
These historical places are steeped in ancient history, myths, and magic, many of which hold their own share of Dark History, too! From ancient architecture to dramatic landscapes, these sites preserve the stories, beliefs, and moments that shape our world.
The Banks of the Danube in Budapest, Hungary, offer their own beautiful and awe-inspiring architectural heritage, such as the Hungarian Parliament Building and Buda Castle (Budai Vár).
Standing Stones, Monoliths, and the Unexplained
Ancient UNESCO sites like Stonehenge have their own mysterious origins and purpose. Whether celestial, spiritual, or something else entirely, they remain shrouded in mystery and reveal ties to ancient civilisations.
Awe Inspiring Natural Landscapes
UNESCO’s natural landscapes captivate with their beauty and mystery. From Old Harry Rocks on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast to the awe-inspiring basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, these landscapes invite wonder, curiosity, and ongoing geological study.

What is Dark Tourism, and why is it Important?
Dark tourism is the practice of visiting places with dark historical backgrounds. Often connected to death, tragedy, conflict, and the darker threads of human history. These spaces should always be approached with respect, awareness, and empathy, and are visited to pay respects, for education, or for curiosity.
Slow, Connected Travel over Fast Content
This blog is rooted in presence and invites you to slow down, listen to the past, and acknowledge the weight of the history these places carry. With this, we gain a deeper understanding of humanity and of how precious life is. This allows us to engage with the past and with the history that has shaped our world.
The past should be remembered, as it is as much a part of us as it is our loss, cultural depth, and world history.
Crypts, Ossuaries, and spending time with the Dead
Bone Chapels, such as Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) in Évora, Portugal, and Sedlec Ossuary (Kostnice v Sedlci) in Kutná Hora, Prague, offer space for quiet reflection and contemplation of life and death.
While many crypts under Cathedrals house the bones of plague victims to prevent overcrowding in cemeteries, such as the UNESCO site of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Austria, which gives insight into the darker days of civilisation, housing the bones of over 11,000 people.

A Journey Into the Magic and Shadows of Our World
Created in 2026, this travel blog offers a fresh perspective on what’s often lost in our fast-paced world. I’m drawn to places that invite calm and contemplation. Sites that speak to the soul.
Though many of these havens are now hidden in cities or overwhelmed by modern development, it is the ability to look at them with calm and curiosity that deepens your experience.
The unique energy and history of these places, and your ability to truly connect with them are what make the experience so special and unique to you and your journey.
What you can expect from me
Expect weekly blog posts from practical travel advice, my own personal experiences of a place, dark tourism travel destinations, UNESCO World Heritage travel destinations, the history behind the place explored, detailed accounts of dark historical figures, folklore, myths and magic!
Dark Storytelling and Historical Figures
As well as my travel experiences and how certain places made me feel, you will also find highly researched, detailed accounts of significant historical figures and families I have learnt about along my travels, such as Elizabeth Báthory, the Blood Countess, of Hungary, Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler), the Wallachian ruler and inspiration for Count Dracula, and the Habsburg family of Austria, who have a line of Dark History connected to them.
